 Water, Environment, Sanitation and Health

MPSSM had worked extensively since 1997 on improving water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in Maharashtra. More than 100 villages were covered and more than 10000 families made aware about good water, sanitation and hygiene practices. It also constructed more than 1000 toilets with the help of Govt. Funding agencies, corporates and people’s own contribution. It helped villagers get safe and pure drinking water through installation of more than 150 handpumps.

For the sustainability of these activities, MPSSM trained local masons in construction of toilets, washing platforms, areas near hand pumps, etc. It also formed WASH committees in each, which ensured a continuous process of improving water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in the villages.

For ensuring  proper waste water and waste foods, MPSSM trained villagers and started the concept of Kitchen Gardens and Soak pits, so that not only wastewater is percolated properly making it pure and safe below the ground but also the nutritional plants get organic manure.

To ensure the local environment is clean, MPSSM trained villagers in smokeless chullas, renewable energy sources and created awareness about the environment under School Environment Awareness Programmes in more than 100 villages.
